At the age of four, Johnny Marcon was diagnosed with WPW syndrome - a rare congenital heart disease. However, it wouldn't be until age 17 when he would decide to correct the abnormality. Johnny knew that eventually he would come to Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for treatment - but not until he was ready.
In between those years, under medical supervision, Johnny learned to pace and control himself as he led an active lifestyle. He participated in his favorite sports - soccer, surfing and volleyball. However, his condition was limited when it came to running and swimming. As Johnny grew and with college on the horizon, he decided he wanted no physical limits. At age 17, as a senior in high school, he was ready to be cured. He talked to his mother and informed her he was ready to come to CHOC.
Johnny was referred to expert Dr. Anjan Batra, Medical Director of Electrophysiology at the CHOC Heart Institute. Dr. Batra performed an electrophysiologic study, or EP study, which provides valuable diagnostic information that then leads to an appropriate course of treatment. To correct Johnny's condition, a non-surgical procedure called radiofrequency ablation (RF) was performed. The procedure has a 90-98% success rate and eliminates the need for open-heart surgery or long-term drug therapies. Thanks to Dr. Batra, Johnny is completely cured.
"I was really nervous about my procedure, but Dr. Batra was so great and was able to calm me," said Johnny. "I am relieved to be able to lead a normal life."
Johnny's mother, Jody, even more grateful, added "Dr. Batra made such a difference in my child?s life."
Looking to the future, Johnny is eager to pursue additional sports activities, without worries, as he begins college at UC Santa Barbara in the Fall. His experience with his condition as a child will no doubt help him overcome any challenges he might face as a young adult!
